I think we should develop a list of designers who have copied. Because a lot of them do it again, when we think we have forgotten, and get away with it.
However, before you post ANYTHING in this list, please make sure you take the following steps.
We want to make sure that we DO NOT falsely accuse ANYONE. That's just not nice. I've been falsely accused before, and it sucks.
Therefore, before you accuse anyone of copying, you must do the following:
1. look at the code of both the skins. If they are different, it couldn't be copied. Hey, great minds think alike, don't they?
2. Then, if it turns out that the person was copying, warn the person who is copying. Give them a chance to "rectify" their name and remove the offending template. A lot of new users don't know any better, so it's nice to give a warning first.
3. Finally, if none of the above works, put a post here, listing the designer's username. Please provide the url for both the preview of the offending skin, and the skin that was copied, so that other people can examine the code as well.
4. Tell myles! Myles can either remove the template, and I'm sure he could remove repeat offenders too. You can tell myles by lodging a complaint against the skin.
5. If the copy is off of a non-blogskins site, post the url for the copied template, as well as the one posted here.
Hopefully, by creating this list, we can prevent people from copying in the future, and discourage repeat-offenders.

If I went to your design site, took all of your designs, made the background colors the text colors and vice versa, changed the graphics to suit my needs, would the designs not still be yours? I say they would, but according to #1 on your list, nope. I would have just a "great" mind and be like you. My point is, I am a graphical artist. I can't do HTML layouts at all. So I come here. I have taken layouts from here and rearranged them so much the original creators didn't recognize them. Did I still give them credit? You bet I did. I also gave BlogSkins credit too.
If you're guilty of taking a skin, just apologize and go on. After all, we're all people here. I'm sure whoever is making the accusations would appreciate your honesty and apology. Then-- move on. Don't lag around trying to be an advocate of some kind. Take your business elsewhere.

I'm sorry, but I can recognize my own code no matter what people do.
If you rearrange people's code without their permission, that's a violation of international copyright law. sorry, but that's the truth.

If you can't do HTML very well, go learn. anyone with half a brain can.
My point for #1 is, if they look alike, but the code is different, then it can't be a copy. If they have similar code, even if they look totally different it's a copy
someone should sue you for copyright violation.

yes there are intelligent people out there, and the ones I've talked to have been very nice. But there's so many people who are just GODDAMN STUPID and can't speak ENGLISH, and CAN'T GET IT THROUGH THEIR THICK SKULLS THAT YOU SHOULDN'T COPY AND THAT IF SOMEONE SAYS THAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE COPYING THAT IT DOESN'T MEAN THEY ARE COPYING THEMSELVES! GOD PEOPLE ARE SO STUPID.

this is why I left. I've been trying to help you, giving you html tips and everything, but none of you want to learn.
I've told you to check your html, and to validate it, but you all refuse because you're too lazy or something.
sorry, but there are hard workers out there, and they don't get the credit they deserve.

to the people who have no brain, please leave. If you can't understand simple arguments, then you don't deserve to be using our skins.
Heck, we should be paid for what we do! And these stupid ungrateful people keep on running us down!

this wasn't intended as a flame war, but you misunderstood me. i know enough html to get by. I don't want to be an html designer because i don't want to donate my time to something that takes up a lot of time and no one either credits me or out and out steals it. let's face it... simple html codes, such as color codes, aren't copyrighted. i can make a site with a black background. does that mean every other site that comes out after mine with a black background is infringing on my copyright? no. does that mean i'm infringing on someone else's copyright by using the black background? no. but if i went to any site on the web, saved the layout, opened it with notepad or dreamweaver and took out their counter, content, but kept the basic design and image, am i infringing on their copyright? yes! i've changed the code so the colors are different, but the basic layout is their's. the designs looked really similar from an outsider's point of view. i don't know which one was made public (on the entire net) first and i don't care.
as for whatiscopyright.org, i pratically have that site memorized. i've had thieves come to my site, steal my images, copy my journal entries word-for-word, steal my bandwidth. i've even had people steal my own photographs and claim my face as their own. which is why 90% of my site is password protected now.
as offensive as you come off -- stating that i am somehow not as superior as you because i dedicated my life to something meaningful and not donating time make layouts for "ungrateful morons"-- i think you're hiding something. but that's just me.
if you feel you should be paid, do it. get a password site and don't let anyone see the designs unless they make some kind of donation. if you can't afford one and people are still "stealing" from you, don't put anything else out there that can be stolen. simple as that. people email me, i give them a price, they pay it, and i make them a graphic. that and the password protection has cut my stolen work way down.

sorry that was a bit offensive, but the idea of anyone stealing anything makes me want to throw up and bang my fists in the walls.
no you can't copyright "html" because, hey you can't, just like you can't copyright the english language.
but you can copyright the way html is arranged. just like you can copyright the way english is arranged. That's why books are copyrighted...
anyway, sorry... but there are ungrateful morons. I do it for the nice folk, and they are really nice.
also, if I didn't do it my blog template would change once every hour!
hahah. yeah... it's like I have an itch to type code.

I'm a bit offended that you're pretty "pissed off" at the general blogskins community. And I'm not sure I get this:

So you'd rather somebody change the code a bit and still have it look like your template than somebody who has a similar code with completely different images and things like that? That doesn't seem like it makes much sense to me. I don't see the problem, as long as they credit you. I know most people don't, but then again most of those people don't know that what they're doing is wrong...

francey- i thought you were insinuating that i was a brainless moron for not knowing enough html to make my own layout. i don't think this site, or any html design site would be here if we all knew enough to make our own layouts?
xx- that was my point exactly. even when i change the skins i get here, i still credit blogskins and the original designer. why take credit for something i obviously didn't do?

Okay this blacklist thingy can also be for those who low-rank other people skins because they don't want them to get more stars.
An example is patKreuk. he made a skin and i went to comment on it, saying the bg colour needs some work on it and after that, he went to my skins and started giving them low ranks even if it suits others.
I feel that he wants revenge.
I gave him 3 stars and i think he wants 5. this is unreasonable and he ranks most of my skin 1 star.
I cant stand this kind of people.

francey- i'm glad this was sorted out. i just wanted to voice that usually when two layouts look alike, they are semi-copies of each other. someone copied someone's layout, especially when the layouts both turn up around the same time.

Hey guys, if you have your own domain name, I wanted to let you know that you can ban IP's. Yup, if someone keeps harassing you you can use a .htaccess file to ban their IP, so they can never bother you again.

On a similar note, if you have your own domain name, and are storing you images there, you can use a .htaccess file to prevent people from hotlinking and stealling your bandwith.
You can also do nifty tricks like, replacing a hotlinked image with another not-so-nice image.
Imagine if the background tile for someone's blog said "I suck because I steal bandwith"
That would be so hilarious.
More reasons to get my own domain name...

true.  but some hosts you have to get them to do the ip banning. there are java scripts that can by pass that, and you can create a script .htaccess. i know you can also ban hits from certain links with the .htaccess file.

hye francey!!! hahaha, wow... its like a venting machine here. haha, its kinda cool... i was reading through and got all terrified when you and frozenstar started at it... but then i felt relief when it was okay again...
i agree with ur #1... i thought someone was copying my code, but they werent... we just learned form the same html tutorial... so, its truly is hard to tell whether or not someone is copying... and the fact that i witnessed an incident where someone copied the code of my friend, and she "made him pay real bad" :Z
hm... you know what we should do... start a domain name for blacklisting... HAHAHAHa.. sorry, i thought it would be cool...

just had to ask this cause there are people rating my skin low. Does stealing an idea count? The idea was indeed "stolen" but the whole layout was different. does that count as stealing??
