Although this is a suggestion and belongs to the suggestion area, many have been visiting this forum lately and I feel that by posting this suggestion here, I will be able to get quicker and more replies.
Thanks for your understanding.

Homepage Layout
Anyway, I would like to request for a change in the layout for BLOGSKINS.COM's Homepage. It's quite boring and I feel that there should not only be advertisements from other sites but also advertisements for competitions or any other BLOGSKINS related interesting events. This will be able to attract many people to join and gain interest in this aspect of the Internet. I myself lack interest in submitting skins because also from my observation, I don't receive much comments as I did before the layout was changed.

Event-based Competitions
I understand that many competitions are hosted, aiming to make this site as interesting as possible. However their attractiveness can be improved if they are 'advertised' on the homepage. (i wish to emphasize that again).

Featured Contributor- not available now
Approximately a year ago, the feature 'Featured Contributor' has indeed helped to gain recognition of a skinner for his/her capabilities in creating outstanding skins. However, there were disputes when wrong people were chosen to be featured contributors. On the other hand, I feel that there was nothing wrong and basically it was due to plain jealousy. I am not saying anyone in particular but this is what I THINK.

Top 15 Rated- available in 'Top Skins' page
"Top 15 rated" is also one of the best features of BLOGSKINS.COM. However, creating a new page specially for it doesn't really attract me as before because it does not show how these skins stand out and nowadays because these skins don't gain as much recognition as before (when the section is placed on the homepage.) Sadly this has also been taken away as many did not like the idea. Maybe, again, it was due to contradicting judgement towards these skins.
I feel that through such competitions for FC and Top 15 rated spots, there will be increased standards in skins and the primary reason behind such low standard skins nowadays is due to decreased competition and lack of eagerness to create new skins at every attempt.

These are just my opinions and you are not forced to agree with them. Your objections are welcomed.
Please voice out your opinions as well. Thank you.

  Agree with Leisurely.

Maybe create a IRC server, and then place an IRC widget on the site, so we can create our own channels, and talk about stuffs. Then the forum can also let people advertise their channels. And their bots, for trivia channels.

(P/S: IRC = Internet Relay Chat)

I think everything has to be updated. Even the colours of the links. And maybe themes for the Blogskins Profile Page since everyone is so confused with it.

Hmm, I think there could be preset themes we could choose for our profile pages. Of course users who wish to design their own layout for their profile pages can still do so - I'm obviously not advocating squelching this creativity - but some users find this difficult, or would rather spend their time making blogskins rather than styling their pages, so that could be a good idea. :)

Of course, it could be rather troublesome to implement.

I think the signature idea would be interesting; however, I fear that it would pose some problems, potentially resulting in decreased usability of the site.

Firstly, the current signature-free system makes it easy to read forum posts at one glance. Under the current system, readers of the forum can skim posts for their essence and understand what a post is talking about without perusing it in detail. Having signatures may distract users and stop them from being able to do this.

Secondly, the signature system might be abused by some users in several different ways, including spamming, obscene content and huge images.

I will address the topic of spamming first. Currently, users who spam the BlogSkins forums have to copy and paste their spiel into the forum reply box multiple times. This small inconvenience limits the scale and frequency of spamming, which is already too high. If signatures are allowed, users will be able to simply paste their spiel into their signatures and make multiple posts. This will make it much easier for users to spam the forums, possibly causing an increase in the occurrence of spamming and advertisement.

This is an even bigger problem in the case of huge lists of links, such as the long list of Chinese links to advertisements of Australian universities and Japanese websites posted multiple times in the PSLE school-choosing thread. These posts spanned several screens. Imagine if users' signatures included this.

Another way in which the signature function might be abused is obscene content. A single post of obscene content is bad enough; imagine obscene content in every post of a given user! People may be offended and access to BlogSkins might be impeded by web filters. This could result in a large number of BlogSkins users being unable to access the website, as because of the young age of many of the users, their computers may have Internet filters installed on them by their parents.

Finally, the signature function may also be abused by users who post huge images. There are several categories of these images.

The first category is huge avatars in signatures. Users may feel that the 100x100 icon they are allowed to have is too small, and may post enlarged versions in their signatures. While this may please these users and others who enjoy looking at the avatars, it will be very distracting, and will slow down page load for many users. Users who post huge pictures of themselves may also face privacy concerns, and many users do not wish to see big faces staring at them every time they read a thread.

The second category is graphic images. This overlaps with the obscene content category mentioned above in that some users may troll the forums by putting large obscene images in their signatures, offending and traumatising many users. Some users may also post gory pictures of violence or birth defects, frightening innocent users who visited the forums trying to participate in discussions, only to be confronted by unwanted graphic images that will not go away.

The third category is large colourful images or animations. This overlaps with the above two categories; however, it deserves a mention of its own. Users might be annoyed and distracted by large, brightly coloured pictures that hurt the eyes. This is compounded in the case of glaring animations. A particular area of concern is bright flashing colours like strobe lights. While to most users these will merely be annoying, it can trigger seizures in users with photosensitive epilepsy, posing a genuine health risk.

I believe that the aforementioned concern of abuse through images can be prevented by simply not allowing images in signatures. However, this poses its own problems; many users will want to have images in their signatures, such as smileys, small second avatars or pictorial renditions of Unicode characters such as Chinese text which may not be visible to all users, for entirely innocuous reasons, and it may be unfair to ban all images because of the possibility of abuse.

However, the signature idea is not entirely without merit. Signatures would add to the personalisation of users' posts and identities; users will be able to post slogans, mottoes or quotes in their signatures, expressing themselves and brightening their day. For the above reasons I think the signature idea is a valuable suggestion that should be considered, but with large caveats.

---

I think allowing triangular brackets would mess up the HTML formatting in forum posts. This probably isn't possible.

---

More will follow in a later post, as I can feel another long post coming on, and I don't want to make this post too long.

There's something else I forgot to mention - we should have a username-changing function. Even Wikipedia, which emphasises attribution of edits to users, anonymous, pseudonymous or otherwise, allows registered users to change their usernames through applying at WP:CHU. What more for BlogSkins, which is after all much less formal? Currently, users who wish to change their usernames have to create new accounts and discard their old ones. This poses several problems, notably confusion due to identity fragmentation, inaccessibility of old skins and forum problems.

Firstly, changing of accounts may create confusion in the community. If you go to user Y's profile page and see that user Y has been a member for one month, you may assume that user Y is a newbie and treat him as such. You will not know that Y is user X's new username unless it is expressly stated. If changing of usernames is allowed, users' old pages can be replaced by a soft or hard redirect to their new profile pages. Of course, users will still be able to change their accounts the old way.

Secondly, changing of accounts may result in the inaccessibility of old skins. Not all users link to their previous profile pages, and fewer still bother to repost their old skins; even if they do so, comments and ratings will be lost. Interested users may not be able to find users' old skins, resulting in floating user-less accounts with skins nobody can find.

Thirdly, changing of accounts may result in difficulty attributing forum posts. If you see a post by Y, you may not be able to connect the post to X and respond accordingly. The maintenance of users' identities is crucial to put their forum posts in context.

Of course, most of these problems will remain to some extent even with username-changing. Users may still be confused by the different usernames, and of course users will still be able to delete their skins. However, with username-changing, skins that users want to preserve will not be rendered difficult to access, and the confusion will be greatly reduced by the absence of the proliferation of alternative accounts and old identities.

One more thing to add: there should be a notification column like in FB, where it updates us on replies on our forum posts and comments on our skins and so on.

  I agree with w1k143va.

There should be a little bar on the bottom of our page to show of notifications, skins and such. AND, most importantly, it should have a little chatbox so that we could chat easily there instead of going to the forums and posting a thread. :D

I think there should be a whole new category in the Form for competitions :) That way people know where to go and there's less spam in the General category.

Here's one question I want to ask:

What colour you want the links to be? It's plain boring blue and if we were to put pink, all the guys will go 'EWWWW' but when it comes to guy colours I think girls can handle it. (My brother is freaking allergic to pink)

  Purple! or orange lol

to w1k143va :
That is wht we need mods in the first place,to ban all these spammers.
Plus if the forums allow, the mods can give a warning to people who post gory images and ban them temporarily.
And no,there is a limit on how big a sig can be,so it'll be like 400x150 or something like tht. :)
