i'm getting a laptop for my birthday and i don't know which brand and operating system i should choose.
Brand:
1) Sony
2) Hewlett Packard
3) Acer
4) IBM (Lenovo)
5) Compaq
6) Dell
or
1) Apple
Operating System:
1) Windows XP Home Edition
2) Windows XP Professional
3) Windows Vista Home Premium
4) Windows Vista Business
or
1) Mac OS X
** Also, is 2GB worth of RAM a good choice for about $2000? Can I get larger memory at the same rate?

unless u have concerns abt application incompatibility issues in which case u shd prob get win xp professional.

erm don't try vista because:
1. mostly not compatible with a wholeload of stuff, yet.
2. focuses more on aesthetics than actual user-friendlyness.
i've vista, and it's total hell. xp rocks more.

definitely.
even if you are a die hard windows fan, apple at least allow you to partition part of your laptop (half i think) for windows. so you could get your cool mac system, do your designs with mac, and if you want to play some games which are only available in windows, open up your windows broswer.
and a mac shuts off in 3 seconds no matter what. (:

i recently got a laptop for christmas. it's a lenovo and vista.
so far the laptop is ok i guess but vista is reallyyyyyyyy irritating.
the whole security thing keeps making windows pop up and all and it isnt compatible with quite a number of games.

what is your budget?
if it is like below 3k.
no point getting vaio. specs for below 3k sucks.
you can get acer. i saw alot of friends use them.
they dont spoil easily, just that it gets like a living bomb after using it for more than 1 hr in room temperature.
HP laptops are freaking heavy. unless those that are pathetic or running by AMD(dont get em)
IBM sucks.. LOL. big black box. lack of design.
compaq hmm... not a favourite in laptops....
dell just dont get it.
APPLE ROCKS. but you must use OSX..
for operating system. you can try using windows vista home premium/business. unlike most belief, vista has already stablized and rather safe already.
however if you wna get XP, of course professional.
and XP support is stopping soon. (2014 around there).
and if want feels that the aero is too irritating.
can always disable it.
seriously if you want the best OS, get ubuntu. free, a hybrid of OS X and Windows.

vista sucks. i got acer desktop with vista and it lags me out sometimes. i find it irritating too.

I use acer and it has problems. Basically, it's 'cause I use it the whole day, and laptops aren't meant for that kinda use, they're supposed to be given time to cool down. From what I've heard, though, acer is a pretty good brand. Apple, too. I'm not sure which is better, though.
As for the operating system -- definitely Windows XP Home Edition. It's the best (:

JUST DON'T EVER USE VISTA.
There are lots of customization packs for Windows that resemble Vista, for free, there's no need for hundreds of dollars spent on a stupid OS.
Windows XP Professional would be good. =D

my laptop's Compaq with windows vista premium. i think it's really really nice though, why does everyone else seem to have a problem with vista O_O i choose laptops mostly based on design, so it's either Apple or Sony VAIO (for me)

using vista, quite alright except that the stupid microsoft word totally sucks. like when im doing schoolwork and stuff then i insert picture from file not copy and paste the layout of the picture will be super weird and it will be overlapping...etc
and i like my windows vista (=
and mac is not good, because like the programs are of a different format, and you always have to convert here and convert there...etc
my vista laptop doesn't really lags like hell, so maybe its like your laptop or something?
i don't think you should get sony because sony is like branded and its like for the same specs you can get another brand at a lower price. unless you wanna go for brand, then get sony. or if you want colour. since dell's colours are wow-so-bright

why is everyone going against vista.
if you specs are good.
you will enjoy vista.
vista is far better than XP and has solved many bugs and critical issues.
seriously stop buying those integreted graphics or what 1GB ram.
if you are not willing to fork out the money, then expect your com to lag.
or choose XP and realise that when the whole world is using vista you are still stuck with XP.
just like win ME.
btw. vista is considered the most stable released compare to other windows released. wins 98 was so bad they had to come out with a 2nd edt.

Okay, I agree about the part that HP laptops are heavy.
But I'm fine with Vista and mine's not even laggy. o.o
I don't really play games on my laptop, so I've nothing to say about that.
If you want to use Apple, it's very troublesome because since you're still schooling and all, you have to convert here, convert there and school computers aren't very high tech (are they?) so it most probably won't be compatible with school computers if you want to do powerpoint stuff.
Basically I suggest you to get the same (as mine) lah.
Easier to draw. Heh.
(By the way, I'm using an old version of word (etcetc) so I have no comments about the word)

its just their opinion. and i think that vista rocks, except for some parts such as the insert picture however you can fix it with copying pictures instead.
i have xp on my com, its so much slower, and unless you have ie7, it seriously sucks. like no tabbed browsing, which i was so not used to when i used it for awhile that time! and because i usually open many tabs, i have to open many windows.

I think you should wait. Because the new apple laptop is coming.
Which is also the world's slimmest laptop. If you don't wish to wait,
I suggest you buy apple or vista ones. Because they are great.

my school computers all suck like hell one lah.
it's all the super ancient computers, and the photoshop in the school computer is v5.5.
the IE is not the IE7.
rahhhhhh.
and it sucks badly cos the school internet is slow.
school make us buy tablet, smart loh, waste our money, they save money of cheapo "gu dong" computers.
school make us buy fujitsu tablet, vista.
i heard fujitsu is not a really good brand -.-
