There are a few different questions you should ask yourself before submitting a skin.
1.) What is the main focus of my skin? Remember, this is a blog skin. The blog part should be the biggest part of the layout and should not be smaller than things like about me, links, etc.
2.) Is my skin messy/Is my skin presentable? Beats me, but a neat skin is a good skin though there are few exceptions to that rule. Use tables if you have to to make your layout organized and neat.
3.) Does my skin load fast? There are many things you can do to improve the loading time of your skin. First off, using DIV's instead of tables. Tables are good for beginners to easily organize a layout. They're not bad, but they load slower than DIV's would. Another thing to consider are images. Can you make the image out of a few DIV's? This makes for faster loading time as well. But, if you need to use an image, make sure the image's size is the size you are going to use on your page. Otherwise the computer will load the full sized picture, then resize it...which takes time. Another thing that slows down loading time are those FILTERS. Like those Opacity changing filters take lots of time to process, since IE is very slow at doing that.
4.) How much empty space is there? If you have a small layout, center it. If it's left to the side then it makes the layout look very empty and plain, but if it's centered it doesn't look empty and plain. Crazy eh? Even if you don't have much on your layout, a background color other than black or white can sometimes make up for lack of...something
5.) Who will my skin appeal to? Obviously you can't please everybody, but you should aim to please someone...other than yourself. For example, if you're making a skin with barbie dolls, make the skin girly, etc. If you're making a skin that's supposed to be depressing, make it look darker. Darker background...etc.
6.) Is it readable!? An important thing that a lot of people miss (I think I have too) is that the blog should be readable! The whole point of a blog is so that people can read it. Right? Well, then someone correct me. A light background with a light text color doesn't work, and neither does a dark and dark. Common sense.
I don't mean to make fun of anyone, just remember these things.

Another one, Don't make like an iPod layout or anything like that just bedcause everyone is doing it.
Nobody (in my case) would not look at it because they'd get sick and tired of everybody create the same themed layout.
They might not bother looking at it

Cutting up images in programs such as Image Ready help reduce long loading time, I don't know how does using DIV as opposed to table help anything in term of loading my 0.02 cents.

hi. i wanna know how to link a certain spot in the picture to the textbox.
i use photoshop to make pictures and imageready to edit them. i am currently learning how to make a skin and am at the stage where i know to position all the textboxes of "archives", "entries", "tag" at the same spot. i am ready to link all of them to their respective buttons but i don't know to.
it's something like those blogs where u click on the "blog" button and the entries would appear. click on the "tag" button and the tagboard would appear.
can anyone help me??

Whoa there, haven't visited here in awhile. Good to see that my thread still lives, however.
A lot of you are asking, simply, "How do I make a skin/layout/template/any-other-word-that-goes-with ?"
No one can tell you "Do this, this and that, and you have a template."
A template/skin/blog is simply a webpage, with dynamic code inserted into it. The dynamic code is, of course, the text of your blog.
Coding/making a blogskin is no easier than making a full out webpage. In fact, I might say it's harder considering you need to use the Blogger code. What everyone should know is that you can just decide one day you wanna make blogskins and then BOOM, you're on the top 10 most downloaded. This takes time, it's like an art. You need to learn the basics, like in drawing.
Start with even the simplest things. In drawing, for example, how to hold your pencil correctly. Then when you get more advanced, shading, perspective, how to use the eye to trick the mind into seeing different things...
If you wanna learn how to make a BlogSkin, gotta start from the basics. Learn HTML. Quite simply, it's better than using a program such as Frontpage or Dreamweaver. Only after you have a good handle on HTML, you can then go into Frontpage and those "What You See Is What You Get" (WYSIWYG) editors.
Anyway, my point is, be patient and try and learn how. I suggest starting at w3schools.com to learn about HTML.
Good luck everyone.

hey, you're styles are good huh... but that's the basics of this blog making...
Personally, i think people tend to like simple and over-decorated... They do not like anything in between. So if I were you, choose from the two. And it would surely be a good skin Ü
