I have used this website many times when looking for a blog skin. However, I have noticed that the ratings system is almost utterly useless. It seems as if 5 stars is automatically given to everyone regardless of how good the skin is.

I think it is very annoying that every skin is greeted by the same applause and 5 stars. Ratings have nothing to do with being nice to people, their point is to make it easier to diferentiate the good skins for the bad skins.

Please forgive if I am wrong in thinking that as many users here seem to be from asia, the culture is more inclined to be very polite. Correct me on this one.

Anyway, my point is that I think people should rate skins honestly. Have a look at the recent skins of the day, and compare it with one of the new skins which has got instant five stars. Doesn't the skin of the day deserve better.

Its not being mean, its being honest and useful for the community. Also, it is not fair for those talented skinners who should be able to stand out from the crowd.

Tell me what you think, but dont tell me that I don't have a right to criticize skins because I couldn't do any better. I am no chef but I can still say whether a food is nice or not.

Thanks

What a stereotype. However, this is true in a sense. Most of the Singaporean blogskinners know each other, and because of this, we (I) feel that we are (I am) obliged to rate our (my) friends 5 stars for the skins they make, even if they look bad. (But sometimes when it really looks like trash, we don't rate at all.) And if you are a famous / popular skinner friend of ours (mine), we'd (I'd) find it impossible to rate your skins low. This screws up the rating system of BS.com. And that's sad.

'Face' is something important in our Asian society. We (I) don't like to look bad in front of people, and we (I) don't like making our (my) friends look bad. Rating our (my) friends low makes me look like I'm some unsupportive bitch, and I'm not 'giving face' to my friend.

What's worse is that many skinners these days expect high ratings. They say that you shouldn't rate at all if you're gonna rate low. (What bullshit; some of them really suck.) And the friends of those skinners would give them 5 stars because of the whole 'giving face' thing. With nobody rating them what they deserve, their skins would get pretty high rates, and those lousy as shit skins might even get SOTD.

However, just because you get annoyed by that, it doesn't give you the right to go on a 0.5-star rating spree. I don't think you meant harm, but really, it's not a nice thing to do.

Yea I agree with xragdollx =] I've been shot down for bringing someone's rating down, causing her to drop from the top 15 rated,ah well that was really annoying

hmm...I've just been poking around the newer skins, and I think both the quality of the layouts and the ratings have gone up since I last visited. at the same time, the layouts seem to be more formulaic, more conventionally beautiful. but people like conventional beauty, which could be another reason for the 5 star ratings.

for the record, I'm pretty ancient on this site, and back when I made skins, people submitted anything (expageish layouts and whatnot), so you can imagine the ratings weren't all 5 stars. I myself have gotten a number of horrible ratings and even worse comments on my skins. but then again, imageless has never been very popular.

I just made a similar post. I think the problem lies with the users. They won't except "your skin is fugly" as a reason for a 0.5 though it most certainly is one. A very good one, in fact.

Don't bring race and culture into this.

Believe it or not, culture, not so much race, has a lot to do with this.

This is just my own opinion, and of course I don't wish to anger or criticize anyone.

I do agree that 5 stars should be reserved for skins that really break out from all these common and seen-all-the-time skins. But the thing is no-one (not even myself) want to see comments like "Oh this is nice! (4.5 stars)" or something like that. Its like being shot down with no reason at all.

Then another thing, as mentioned by ragdoll "giving face". Yea, the culture in the asian region is more of letting people keep their pride and tell them whats wrong in private and not "throw their face" or embarrass them in public.

And another thing is the pressure. Its like, "okay, I am the first to rate so I can rate below 5 if I mean it" but if you are like the 5th and later commentor/rater and everyone gives a 5, yet you give a 4 or 3.5, even with reasons, people will start to shoot you down. Or maybe some are like "if I rate 5, they will rate me 5 too!" and vice versa. Its the ugly truth, but nonetheless the truth.

Thats why, nowadays, I seldom give ratings, I only give 5s, and only to those that I personally think deserve them. Not to those "I get a backround, paste an image and add some words, taddah! A skin!" kind of skins. And I don't expect a perfect 5 for my skins either...So yeah...*shrugs*

Hey, I'm a cummunications major, so I've learnt about interpersonal comms and absolutely agree with __j3rk3tt3 about the culture part.

Well, it's like most of Asia has more of a high-context culture, meaning we rather have harmony...

ANYWAY, about the topic itself, I so agree that good skins need a chance to stand out and people have been rating blatantly in the sense that...

actually I've seen skins that aren't really 5 star material, you could rate a 4.5. But since someone rates a 5, others DARE not pull the ratings down.

I've seen people rating a big 5 for a really crappy skin and then going on to submit their skin, then pull down other people's rating. i.e. the good ones.

pretty crapped.

Hmm for the record, I think giving 4.5 stars is good enough, because no skin can be perfect, can it? I dunno. I'm being a bit hypocritical here, because I've given 5 stars for skins that are good as well as appeal to me. Rather, I give 4.5 stars to skins which are good but might not exactly be suiting my tastes.

Why don't a few of us rate skins as we see it, and not be "pressured" by all the other people rating 5 stars? I for one, tend to give slightly elaborated comments on what I liked and what I didn't about the skin. I don't just go "nice!" or "sweet!" or something. I try my best to tell the designer what I liked, what I didn't, and some suggestions on how they can improve.

I'd really like to see more in-depth comments on BS.com!

People should be critical when ratinq skins.
But i think that over-critical can caused harm tuh the people. Many people have their own opinion and choice. Some people like to have funky skins, but some like tuh have a simple skin. It's wrong when many people rated 5 stars and u rated 4 stars huh. you oni yourself think that the skin is not suitable for 5 stars but you did not see how much effort they designer puts in. If there is really no effort put in, the skin is considered as a failed skin. Effort counts. Not just the skin don't suits you or you hated the designer and u rated low.

Um, what's wrong with expressing our own opinions? Is it a rule that everyone must give the designer 5 stars? If that is so, then what is the point of having a rating system at all?

In fact, if I'm the only person who thinks the layout is worth four stars, then it shouldn't matter, right? Because it's only one puny person and it really shouldn't matter. And because YOU are the designer, YOU are the one who will make decisions about whether or not to take the suggestions into consideration for your next layout. You can choose to ignore the person altogether, if you like. But that person is entitled to express his/her opinions.

Everyone rate 5 so I had to give a 5? wth? Can't I have my own perspective. Like they say, different people different taste. whats wrong with me for giving a 4 when others give 5? Do i have to follow blindly? I'm not blind and I will not give in. Skins that have problem I will still say out. U can choose to ignore and continue to sink into ur own world of illusion of no return. I've said what I think and if u dont wan to change, that's not my problem.

  I definitely agree with Heroine.

Culture and Race has nothing to do with this. It's kinda unappealing to hear something like that.

But, I do understand you/them. PEACE!!
