A few months back, there was this Dreamhost promotion (which has now ended) and anyone who signs up for the hosting plans back then will get a whole load of storage and bandwidth, in addition to other things. The best thing was that I had to pay only S$119/year, which was cheap for the amount of space Dreamhost offered. Despite already having one hosted domain of my own, I wanted to get another to take advantage of the 'cheap deal'. I was enticed to sign up.
Then I realised that I wouldn't be able to use all that space myself, and I'll be paying for space I'm not even using, which would be a waste of money. So I got Dreamhost's deals off my mind.
In came NearlyFreeSpeech (https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/). Unlike most hosts that make you pay a certain amount monthly (bi-monthly, quarterly, whatever), NFS charges you for what you use. Their rates are $1.00* per gigabyte for bandwidth, and $0.01* per megabyte-month for storage space. Click https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/services/hosting.php to find out more about NFS hosting.
So far, I can only think of 1 con. If you want to host people for free (on subdomains etc), you'll have to pay more for your bills, because you're using space and the person you're hosting won't be paying for it.
However, estimating that you use 50MB of disk space yourself, and your hostees use 15MB each, and you have 5 hostees, that'll total up to 125MB used. The disk space will cost you only $1.25*. If all of you combined uses 2GB of bandwidth, the bill will total each month at $3.25*, which is dirt cheap.
I'm won over. Next year when my contract with my current host ends, I might sign up with NearlyFreeSpeech. How does NFS sound to you?
PS: if you're wondering about sites that are hosted by NFS, Bugmenot.com http://www.bugmenot.com/ is one. On Bugmenot, you can find and share logins for websites that force you to register. It's a pretty popular website. Try Googling hosted by NearlyFreeSpeech; plenty of results should turn up.
*prices aren't in SGD.
